saHistory
The building now known as The Wright Place was built in 1847. The Wright Place was originally built as a family home and served this purpose for about 77 years. In January 1974, The Wright Place and more than a thousand homes in the New Orleans Garden District were classified as a National Historic Landmark. The New Orleans Garden District uniquely displays vast amounts of ante-bellum architecture in homes and business over an 80 block area of beautifully landscaped grounds. Soon after it was deemed a National Landmark the building was purchased by Gayle L. Bird. The home was then turned into The Huber House, a hotel, event space, and gallery combination. In 2004, Gayle L. Bird sold the Huber House shortly after she was married to Saints owner Tom Benson.Millie Wright puchased the business and changed it into what it is known today as The Wright Place. Within months of purchasing the building from Benson, Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans. The area suffered serious wind damage and the cost of repairs were hefty. Still with all the damage in and around the area, the owner of The Wright Place, Millie Wright, opened the business doors as soon as possible. The building that sits at 1522 St. Charles Ave. has had many purposes throughout its 177 years of existence, but the buildings current purpose seems to be the best. The Wright Place has been proving it every day.
